First things first, let's cover pronunciation. I know that was my first thought! To put it in the words of Stuart Jamieson, founder of Fower, it's like ‘flower’ just without the ‘L’. Easy when you know how. So then why? Another good question. Fower is essentially the number four in the old Scottish dialect, and with them being based in Strathhaven, Scotland, it starts to make a little more sense. Four is Stuart’s lucky number, it has personal significances that repeatedly make appearances in his life, so why not right?
The story behind Fower continues to be pretty wholesome, which is just what we like. Stuart’s father owned a metalwork factory, which upon its retirement needed a purpose. And with Stuart’s interests being more in coffee than metalwork, it makes sense to repurpose the site and continue his legacy in an alternative way. And its gone from strength to strength too, what started out as a small coffee roasting operation in a quarter of the space has now expanded to take over the whole unit too. What's more, the surrounding area has developed over time too and has a wonderful local feel, with a pizza shop, a brewery, a gin distillery, you know, all the good stuff!
Stuart shares some of our own ethics too, simplifying great coffee and making it accessible to everyone. His focus is on roasting some solid coffee options, telling stories of the people behind the coffee and highlighting the good that it does, as opposed to going heavy on the technical side of things, deep dives on processing etc, after all, a lot of people simply want to drink great coffee without having to google what an African drying bed is and why they matter.
All in all, an ideal partnership for us, I think you’ll agree. The kicker is the washed Guatemalan Hunbatz you’ll find on our site, good honest coffee, at an excellent price. You’re welcome.
